Whenever you embark on any painting or drawing, its always a good idea to have an idea of the tools that you will use ahead of time. If you stick to say one brush for the entire painting, it will constrain you to use that brush in more ways than one.

Painting of a mosque in Istanbul, Turkey and is a familiar site in the skyline if you have ever visited Istanbul. The architecture of these famous mosques are breathtaking with the domes breaking the longitudinal lines of the city sky and the minarets jutting out into the sky.

Ever wanted to create a painting of a grand master, then you can with your Android tablet and a free copy of Paintology (downloadable from Google play). Fig. 1 shows a famous painting by Vincent Van Gogh ‘Wheat fields with cypresses’ created on the tablet in about 30 minutes. I don’t expect everyone to make a drawing this fast since you may not be as familiar with the tools of Paintology like I am.

I have been getting more used to the Galaxy Tab 2 with my Paintology app loaded and playing around with the brushes and strokes. The key to good drawing and painting requires a versatility in the tools you use and not confine yourself to any specific set of tools. I have to always keep in mind that Paintology has 20 types of powerful brushes that have great effects and are ideal for certain subjects when drawing.

Today, I was fortunate enough to acquire the much talked about Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 which is a 7 inch tablet, and boy what an amazing product it is. The screen is incredibly sensitive and I was itching to do a painting on this tab using Paintology.

There are incredible number of tools available at your disposal from the Paintology app and some of them you can use to create quick abstract art.

Continuing with our last lesson on digital finger painting – mt landscape, here we are going to tackle a sunset using finger painting (fig. 1). The advantage of using fingers for drawing is that some subjects such as clouds can be easier to do then using a stylus probably due to the randomness at which our fingers moves as well as some direct control on the canvas.

No doubt there will be a large group of people who will use the Paintology app on their smartphone using their finger only. Here, I have outlined the basics of a landscape and how quickly you can produce something that is pleasing to the eye. As you get better, you can produce artwork for your friends and relative and send them a customized greeting card, the possibilities are endless!

This painting was done using the Paintology app using the sketch brush style tool. It’s incredible, how quickly you can create the effects using only one brush style.

This is one of the earlier paintings drawn on the Galaxy Note using Samsung’s own proprietary software called “S-Memo”.

This is one of the first of digital paintings that I produced on my Samsung Galaxy Note using Samsung’s own proprietary “S Memo” software that comes with the Android device.

This painting was based on a a picture I found on the internet and I was impressed by the colors of the sky as well as the boulder shaped stones in the landscape.

If you have never done any drawing or painting before, this is a good place to start. The first thing you need to do is get any thoughts out of your head that says ‘you can’t draw’ and replace it with a good dose of enthusiasm and passion. Like any other hobbies, all it takes is a bit of confidence, lots of enthusiasm and plenty of practice.
